Faculty Must Know (updated August 10, 2007)
Understanding Current Processes for eCourseware

Please review the following so that you understand all of the new and current processes for eCourseware. The processes are vastly improved and differ greatly from those used for WebCT.

Do I need to request a course for Fall and in the future on eCourseware?

No. All Fall ‘live' course instances will be created based upon their existence in Banner. Courses will be created on a one-to-one equivalence (i.e. each section will have its own course instance by default into which students will be enrolled/populated, sometimes called a ‘live' course).

When will students be populated/enrolled?

Students are already being enrolled and unenrolled daily based upon the latest feed from Banner and are visible in the Classlist section of your course but cannot view the course prior to the designated start/active date. Currently, access is not available for students and will not occur until 12:01 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2007.

How will my course content get into my live course instance?

All course content is managed now by the faculty member. No longer is there a need to request that your course be created or that your course content be copied. You now have complete control over managing the course content and can selectively move content (discussion topics, files, etc.) to and from live course instances and development course shells.

Should I review the Support Page and the Faculty Semester Start Checklist?

Yes. You should review this page as well as the Faculty Semester Start Checklist to ensure that you are ready for each semester. This page contains all the necessary information for preparing your course content and answering common questions including any updates to processes or procedures.

When/How do I copy course content/components?

Prior to the start of each semester you will need to copy course components from either your development course shell or your previously taught live course instance. You may also copy content components developed in one live course instance to another in order to not have to re-create content for multiple sections. We recommend copying content as early as possible prior to the semester start so as to not impact performance and more quickly complete the process. Note: The process for copying content/components typically takes just a few minutes.

Below are two help documents for understanding how to copy and manager course components:

What about combined courses or course sections? How will those be handled?

There is currently no mechanism to automatically combine courses via Banner. To be able to continue to provide this service, faculty wishing to utilize combined courses will need to indicate so using the Combine Courses Request form.

What if I don't want to develop my course in the live course instance?

If you do not wish to develop your course content in your live course instance (i.e. where students are auto enrolled/populated), you may request a development course shell in which to build, manage, and edit content. Please note, you will then need to import or copy your content into the ‘live' course instance.

Where can I get help in learning how to follow the new processes and eCourseware?

The Advanced Learning Center is providing Quick Start training sessions, Quick Start on-demand tutorials, Open Forums, and additional resources to provide answers to frequently asked questions (see links below) .

To assist with new processes such as copying course content/components, we are encouraging faculty who would like additional help to attend the Open Forums where hands-on assistance will be available.

Support is available via the following:

  1. Quick Start Training Sessions and eCourseware Open Forums
  2. Quick Start Online/On-Demand Learning
  3. Check Ask TOM for the answer to common questions.
  4. Call the Help Desk at 901-678-8888
  5. Help Request Form: for requesting assistance with login, course tools, errors, etc.
  6. Course Request Form: for requesting assistance with development course shell requests, combining semester courses, etc. Not for requesting live semester courses which are auto-created by Banner.
